대한민국 외국어 능력자들이 사회적 책임과 의무를 다하는 국제통번역자원봉사단(이하 봉사단)이 국내외 다양한 프로젝트를 통해 사회적 가치를 실현하며 주목받고 있다. 봉사단은 언어의 장벽을 허물고, 다양한 문화와 소통을 연결하는 가교로서 활발히 활동 중이다.
봉사단은 최근 2023 새만금 제25회 세계스카우트잼버리대회에서 긴박한 철수 과정에서도 전문적이고 순발력 있는 동시통역으로 전 세계 청소년들에게 존재감을 발휘하는 등 통역 자원봉사를 통해 대한민국이 세계의 중심이 될 수 있도록 역할을 다하고 있다. 또한 미국 산타클라라 시의원 케빈 박을 초청해 올해 1월 5일부터 11일까지 진행한 ‘전국 청소년 비전 강연’은 대한민국 청소년들에게 큰 울림을 주며 국제통번역자원봉사단이 성년으로서 책임과 의무를 다하는 아름다운 모습을 보여줬다.

The International Interpretation and Translation Volunteer Group (hereinafter referred to as the Volunteer Group), in which Korean foreign language experts fulfill their social responsibilities and obligations, is gaining attention by realizing social values through various domestic and international projects. The Volunteer Group is actively working as a bridge to break down language barriers and connect diverse cultures and communication.
The Volunteer Group has been playing a role in helping Korea become the center of the world through volunteer interpretation, by providing professional and swift simultaneous interpretation during the urgent withdrawal process at the 25th World Scout Jamboree in Saemangeum in 2023. In addition, the 'National Youth Vision Lecture' held from January 5 to 11 this year invited Kevin Park, a member of the Santa Clara City Council in the U.S. and had a great impact on the youth of Korea by showing the beautiful figure of the International Interpretation and Translation Volunteer Group fulfilling its responsibilities and duties as adults.

Q. 국제통번역자원봉사단은 어떤 단체인가요?

A. 국제통번역자원봉사단은 대한민국 문화체육관광부의 승인을 받은 비영리 민간법인입니다. 2005년에 설립되어 통·번역과 국제교류를 통해 언어로 세상을 연결하는 일을 주 목적으로 활동하고 있는 외국어 자원봉사 단체지요. 통·번역 봉사를 통해 세계와 소통하고, 이를 기반으로 민간외교 역할을 수행하고 있습니다. 현재 약 3,900명의 통·번역 자원봉사자가 활동 중이며, 이들은 정부 및 지자체에서 주최하는 다양한 국제행사에서 공식 서포터즈로 활동하고 있습니다.
A. The International Interpretation and Translation Volunteer Corps is a non-profit private corporation approved by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea. It is a foreign language volunteer organization established in 2005 with the main purpose of connecting the world through language through interpretation and translation and international exchange. Through interpretation and translation services, we communicate with the world and perform the role of private diplomacy based on this. Currently, there are about 3,900 interpretation and translation volunteers working. They are working as official supporters at various international events hosted by the government and local governments.

A. 저희는 국내외 국제행사에서 통·번역 자원봉사를 하고 있습니다. 예를 들어, 2023년 세계 스카우트 잼버리에서는 서울시 자원봉사센터와 협력해 긴박했던 철수 과정을 동시통역으로 지원하며 큰 호평을 받았습니다. 2024년에는 서울국제초청장애인 파크골프대회, 2024동아시아 해역 해양과학 청년포럼, 전주 세계 평화 춤 페스티벌 등 다양한 국제행사에서 공식 통역자원봉사팀으로 활동하며 역할을 성공적으로 마쳤습니다. 외국인 참가자들과의 원활한 소통을 지원하며 행사를 더욱 빛내는 역할을 충실히 수행해 대한민국 국격을 높이는데 기여했다고 자부하고 있습니다.

Q. 국제통번역자원봉사단은 청소년들에게 어떤 기회를 제공하고 있나요?
A. 청소년들에게 외국어 학습 이상의 경험을 제공합니다. 30여 명의 교육 전문 이사들이 청소년들에게 외국어를 가르칠 뿐만 아니라, 이들이 국제행사에 직접 참여해 실질적인 통·번역 경험을 쌓을 수 있도록 돕고 있습니다.
특히 매년 개최되는 전국 학생 영어스피치 대회와 GRIDA 에세이 대회는 청소년들이 글로벌 리더십과 창의적 사고를 키울 수 있는 좋은 기회입니다. 이 대회들은 단순한 언어 능력을 뛰어넘어, 세계를 향한 민간외교관으로 성장할 수 있는 발판이 되고 있습니다. 백범김구기념관에서 매년 2회 개최되는 전국 학생 영어스피치 대회는 오는 2월 8-9일 진행 예정으로 벌써 14회차이고, 대한민국 민간외교의 주역으로 키우기 위해 주변의 작은 이슈부터 나라의 홍보를 글로 표현하는 ‘대한민국민간외교관 –대한민국 청소년이 GRIDA’ 에세이 대회는 전 세계 청소년들에게 에세이집을 기부하는 이벤트로 2회차를 예정하고 있습니다.

A. 저희의 목표는 단순히 언어를 가르치는 데 그치지 않습니다. 언어를 통해 세상을 바꾸고, 청소년들이 민간외교관으로서 세계 속에서 대한민국의 위상을 높이는 리더로 성장하도록 돕는 것이 우리의 비전입니다.
특히 2024년 샌프란시스코에서 진행된 한미 청소년 교류 활동은 이러한 목표를 상징적으로 보여줍니다. 청소년들이 환경 문제와 같은 글로벌 이슈를 논의하고, 전 세계의 청소년들과 협력하는 경험은 그들이 미래의 글로벌 리더로 성장하는 데 중요한 밑거름이 될 것입니다.
A. Our goal is not simply to teach language. Our vision is to change the world through language and to help young people grow into leaders who will elevate Korea’s status in the world as citizen diplomats.
In particular, the Korea-U.S. Youth Exchange program in San Francisco in 2024 is a symbolic example of this goal. The experience of young people discussing global issues such as environmental issues and collaborating with young people from around the world will serve as an important foundation for them to grow into future global leaders.

Q. 샌프란시스코에서 진행된 한미 청소년 교류 활동에 대해 말씀해주세요.
A. 2024년 8월 23일 저녁, 저희 국제통번역자원봉사단 소속 청소년 36명이 비행기에 몸을 실고 샌프란시스코로 떠났습니다. 그들은 지구 환경 문제를 주제로 샌프란시스코 청소년자원봉사단 카약과 함께 친선 스피치 대회와 한미 합동 라운드 프레젠테이션을 진행하며, 지구를 지키기 위한 메시지를 나누었습니다.
이번 여정은 단순한 국제교류를 넘어, 청소년들이 지구의 아픔에 공감하고 해결책을 모색하는 과정이었습니다. 청소년들이 지구 환경에 대한 목소리를 담아 한 권의 책으로 엮어내고, 이를 통해 세계 청소년들과 연대하는 계기를 마련했습니다.
이 활동은 청소년 국제교류 활동의 전환점을 만들어 국내에서는 1365 자원봉사활동에 공식적으로 국제교류 활동 시간을 등록하게 되었으며 미국 국제교류 현장인 밀피타스 시장과 시의원들이 한·미 청소년들의 국제교류 활동의 성과와 지속성의 중요함을 인정해 참가한 학생 전원에게 밀피타스 시장 표창장을 수여했습니다. 특히 리더로 활동한 청소년들에게는 시의원, 상원의원들의 표창을 받는 영광의 기회가 주어져 의미 있는 시간이었습니다.

A. 단체 설립 20주년을 맞은 국제통번역자원봉사단은 창립 20주년 기념사업회(위원장 최성연)를 구성하고 (사)세계한인상공인총연합회(이사장 김덕룡)와 업무협약을 체결하면서 해외에서 대한민국의 저력을 보여주는 명사들을 한국에 초청해 청소년들이 글로벌 리더로 성장할 수 있는 계기가 되는 비전 강연을 기획했습니다. 그 첫 순서로 미국 산타클라라 시의원 케빈 박을 초청해 ‘전국 청소년 비전 강연’을 1월 5일부터 일주일 동안 진행했습니다. 이 프로젝트 진행에 노고를 아끼지 않은 ‘미국 한국어교육재단’ 구은희 이사장에게 지면을 빌려 감사한 마음을 전합니다.

The International Interpretation and Translation Volunteer Group, celebrating its 20th anniversary, formed the 20th Anniversary Commemorative Committee (Chairman Choi Seong-yeon) and signed a business agreement with the World Federation of Korean Chamber of Commerce (Chairman Kim Deok-ryong), inviting celebrities who demonstrate the potential of the Republic of Korea overseas to Korea to plan vision lectures that will provide opportunities for young people to grow into global leaders. As the first of these, we invited Kevin Park, a member of the Santa Clara City Council, to give a 'National Youth Vision Lecture' for a week starting January 5th. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Dr. Eun Hee Koo, Chairperson of Board of Directors of the Korean Language and Culture Foundation, for her hard work in making this project possible.
케빈 박 의원은 미국 이민 2세대로 미국에서 태어나 과학의 요람 미국 칼텍 대학교와 스텐포드 대학을 졸업한 과학자로 실리콘밸리에 있는 구글에서 30여 년을 근무하고 교수 생활과 산타클라라시 부시장을 거쳐 현재 재선 시의원으로 활동하는 저명인사입니다.

Congressman Kevin Park is a second-generation American immigrant who was born in the United States. He graduated from Caltech and Stanford University, the cradle of science in the United States, and is a prominent figure who worked at Google in Silicon Valley for over 30 years, worked as a professor, was the deputy mayor of Santa Clara, and is currently serving as a re-elected city council member.
The lecture by Korean-American Congreeman kevin Park, which contained his adversity, life and courage, was enough to instill dreams and hope in the hearts of young people in Korea.
전북 정읍시 교육청 강당에서 진행한 강연은 특별하게 인상에 많이 남는군요. 정읍시의회 박일 의장님과 정읍시 교육청 최용훈 교육장님의 협조로 이루어진 강연은 엄청난 폭설이 내리는 가운데에서도 학생 100여 명과 학부모들이 ‘용기 있는 자! 타인과 함께하는 리더십’이라는 제목의 강연을 경청하고 질의와 응답이 이어지는 열기로 가득 차 있었습니다. 학생들의 눈높이에 맞춘 케빈 박의 살아있는 비전 강연은 대한민국 청소년들이 세계를 이웃으로 함께 할 리더십을 육성하는 계기가 될 것이라고 믿습니다. 아울러 봉사단 이사장으로서 설립 20주년을 맞은 봉사단이 성년의 책임과 의무를 실천했다는 생각에 가슴 뿌듯한 시간을 보냈습니다.
The lecture held at the auditorium of the Jeongeup City Office of Education in Jeollabuk-do was particularly memorable. The lecture, which was held with the cooperation of Jeongeup City Council Chairman Park Il and Jeongeup City Office of Education Superintendent Choi Yong-hoon, was filled with enthusiasm as about 100 students and parents listened to the lecture titled “Courageous! Leadership with Others” despite the heavy snowfall, and there was a Q&A session. Kevin Park’s living vision lecture, tailored to the students’ level, will be an opportunity for the youth of Korea to foster leadership who will be able to share the world with them. In addition, the chairman of the volunteer group had a heart-warming time thinking that the volunteer group, which celebrated its 20th anniversary, fulfilled its responsibilities and duties as an adult.

Q. 1월 5일 열린 제2회 대한민국 통번역자원봉사대상 시상식에 대해서
A. 2025년 1월 5일 백범김구기념관 컨벤션 홀에는 2024년 1년 동안 수고한 이들과 앞으로 수고 할 이들, 그리고 그들을 박수로 칭찬하는 진정한 국제통번역자원봉사단 180여 명의 가족이 전국에서 모여들었습니다.
자원봉사의 순수하고 뜨거운 가슴을 가진 이들에 대한 칭찬과 격려, 그리고 내일로 이어질 통.번역자원봉사활동과 청소년들의 국제교류활동에 대한 여러 시상식이 펼쳐졌습니다. 미국 밀피타스 시장의 축하 영상과 미국 SF한인회 상공회의소 협회 정승덕 회장의 축사는 시상식을 빛나게 해 준 메시지였고, 국제통번역자원봉사단의 이름으로 세계가 하나 되는 순간이었습니다.
